i'm in exactly the same boat as BoatMaker (pardon the pun :).. )
tent camping for few years now, but when rain hits , or black SE, tent no fun.
budget about the same. But for this price you lucky to get anything over 1990 models.
then the question is woodrot. if you unlucky enough to buy a lemon, then you got to spend heaps on doing the whole thing over.
I am actually just looking for a shell, to negate the whole weight issue, legally and fuel consumption (EB licence with 2003 isuzu kb300 dc 4x4). But the shells really look like woodrot central.

So i was thinking custom shell. Like this...http://www.priclo.co.za/custom_made_caravans_and_trailers.htm ... bottom one. And just fit what i need. Really don't need basin, cupboards, beds.. blowup beds inside good as well. But this may prove to be out of budget as well.
Also i'm worried about sway if caravan too light as well with nothing inside to hold it down. I do plan on at least fridge cause that something missing during long stays while camping... but it will prob only be small chest freezer.

any advise? old caravan vs new custom caravan / trailer ??

Shaakir I would bite the bullet, and buy an old van. Try and hang on a bit and increase the budget and get a desent van and have the comforts af it. If you go the shell way with a blow up you may as well stay with the tent.

Why dont you look at a bush trailer, you are bound to get a desent one at a reasonable price.

Dan sal jy baie geld spaar deur n ingeligte besluit te neem wanneer jy die aankoop maak...Sterkte.....wees rustig......en moet nie hals oor kop besluit nie. Mr Herman...... daai crock? bush trailer going be to small for my family. 2 adults and three kids aged 11 and twins 8. so there already problem number one... not many 5 sleepers out there... yes extended room kids will love, but just on those rainy days... like for instance now in june holidays if we want quick trip to goudini for example. and for winter fishing trips with the guys... 5 guys normally in the bakkie... we just need shelter from wet weather and tent normally does not cater well for this... unless u go canvas... but then that a whole other can of worms... mould etc.
