Gas fridge in caravan
Hello all. I'm new here and new to the whole camping with a caravan. We've camped for years as a family in a tent but have recently acquired a permanent plot at a site we really love but there is no electricity. So we got a little old school caravan which has a gas fridge. I don't know why but I'm super stressed about sleeping in there with a gas fridge. My husband thinks I'm being paranoid but I've heard too many horror stories of people going to sleep and never waking up. How safe are these fridges? Can anyone please shed some light for me.
Most caravans with fridges that can operate on gas, have vents in the floor. If LPG gas leaks, it will escape at the lowest exit - thus the safety vent in the floor.
But nevertheless, nobody wants to experience a gas leak - no matter where, being in the home or caravan. I will suggest to let your fridge serviced by an accredited gas business before you start using it.
As Chris stated LP gas is heavier than normal air and will go to the lowest point in the caravan. There is usually escape vents. Good feedback as well is to have the fridge serviced. If it works correctly there is a cut off switch that will stop gas flow in the event that the little pilot flame blows out.
The only other thing that could be a risk is the connections and the condition of the houses. They do perish over time so I would suggest replacing them and then when everything is connected you can test all the connections with soap water in spray bottle and see if there are any bubbles coming from the connections when gas is open.
Then you should be fine. Gas in general and gas fridges have been used in the caravan camping environment for a very long time. If you maintain the equipment everything should be fine.

Never over tighten the clamps on the hoses as one can weaken the hose and cause a leakage.
As said if it is well maintained there should be no issues ,for piece of mind you can always purchase a decent gas detector or O2 monitor which will alarm if 02 levels are down.
