When I originally bought my Jurgens Fleetline I found that the fridge/freezer was only attached to the caravan frame with one self tapping screw. So, I replaced all the screws (three at the top and two at the bottom). After a few outings I found that all three screws at the top came out again. So, I drilled the holes a bit bigger and fitted 16mm self tappers with Spring washers. Yesterday,I checked again and one had fallen out again and the other two were also loose.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so how did you fix it permanently?

Hoop jy kom reg

The self tappers screw into the top of the fridge frame at the back (which is steel), not into any wood. Also bolts will not work as you cannot get to both sides.

self tappers are the only option, but they will not stay in place even with spring washers

Do I read it right that you are using a bracket from the top of the fridge and then screwed into the wall of the caravan?

If this is the case then peeling rivets might be a better bet than self tappers.

Try to fix the fridge securely at the bottom through the caravan floor as well. This will largely prevent the fridge to move too much at the top.

At the top of the fridge is a metal plate that goes between the caravan wall and the top of the fridge. Good idea to use pop rivets instead of self tappers (can always drill them out if need to remove fridge - have already replaced compressor, so hopefully will not have to remove it again soon)

at the bottom the adjustable feet on the fridge stand on top of a frame (small cupboard below frame with plug socket for fridge). Cannot easily fit fasteners here, but there are two metal bars at the back to fit screws into the back of the fridge frame. These will have to remain as could not get a drill in to drill out rivets.

Thanks for the idea of using pop rivets Chuck. Will do that when we get home from out tour (still in Skukuza at the moment)

If I remember correctly the fridge of the Fleetline is the same as that of the Penta.  Standing on a frame above the wheel arch over the left wheel.  There are a few things to check for as all of them assist to secure the fridge in place.  the slightest play/movement will eventually allow the screws to wiggle lose.  You must remember the caravan body move a lot during a tow.

  1. While the fridge is out secure the top rear plate that also guides the heat out of the vent properly against the side of the caravan.  Drop or raise the plate with about 5-6 mm so that you can miss the old holes but still stay within the cross wood area inside the wall. Just make sure that the place where that plate attaches to the rear of the fridge can accommodate either the 5-6 mm raise or lowering.  Screw the plate against he wall.  Remember to drill the holes at the back of the fridge corresponding to lowering or raising the plate.  These holes 1 mm in size in the aluminium rear of the fridge.
  2. Then ensure that the frame the fridge stands on is properly secured to the floor.  Here I would suggest that you use nuts and bolts with very large flat washers to spread the strain of each bolt over a bit larger surface than just that of the bolt head.  Tighten properly.
  3. Then install the fridge and secure the fridge to the frame.  I would drill new holes in the frame and bottom of the fridge for this.  If possible add an extra self tapper on each side.  When you drill the holes in the bottom of the fridge use a 1 mm drill even for a 3 mm self tapper screw.  The holes in the frame should be just the size to accommodate the self tapper screw.  Any gap here can allow unnecessary movement and again failure of holding the fridge in place over time. DO NOT use the old holes.  An off set of 10 mm should do the trick from each original hole.
  4. Secure the top plate to the rear of the fridge through the rear vent.

Lastly if you can fit it.  Drill a 6mm hole through the side of the fridge and the corresponding wood panel on each side and push a flat head S/steel 6mm bolt through it with a nylon nut on each side.  This was done to the fridge in the Classique I had and came from the factory like that.

Hope you get the fridge to stop moving as it is the moving that causes the screws to come out.

Try to drill the bottom bracket with an angle drive chuck attached to the normal drilling machine. Also try a tap to cut thread for bolts instead of self taps.

Danie the casing of the fridge where the  self tapper currently screw into if I remember correctly is but thin aluminium plate with like sponge fridge insulation on the inside.  There is no "meat" in that for threading.  How ever if there was it would have been the best solution.

I put eye hooks either side of the fridge and use elastic straps to keep the doors closed

Actually not eye hooks, but dejay  rings from builders warehouse. I used the fairly small ‘d’ rings with two small fastening screws, one on each side of the fridge (top and bottom), using 16mm wood screws. Not had a problem with either door opening since (not using the lock anymore)

I bought small plastic straps from Dischem from their baby section, they have various types to be used to secure cupboard doors and drawers from opening by small kids - they are neat and work perfectly.
