Found this place in George the other day

two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

Thanks George. Luckily they are still there. That was when SAS&H was an institution that feeds many South Africans. Now it is overgrown railway lines and station buildings demolished to almost nothing. The hands that built those trains and stations (monuments) are not with us anymore. I salute them.

The last time i rode on those trains and busses was back in 76, the army days. In fact, never been on a train since.........

Was an RP in the army assigned to escort duty, spent the best part of nine months on those trains criss crossing the country. being based at 7 SAI bourkes luck, a land rover driver would drop us of at Graskop, where we got on a railway bus to Nelspruit , that alone was a whole days trip, at Nelspruit we got the train to  Pretoria where we would change trains to which ever part of the country we where going to.

I recall the longest trip was to Cape town , that was a 5 day journey there and another 5 days back....I traveled to almost every base in the country by train that year.

When I was still a school chappie in std 9, my girlfriend's father use to be the operator of this steam locomotive.

If I am not mistaken, on top at the front nose of the locomotive is his wife's name: NOLENE.

I also done my trades at the old SAR & H, started 1981 and took the voluntary severence package in 2001 when things started showing downwards.

My Dad would have LOVED seeing this .... he was Steam Loco Foreman in Germiston for quite some years, then moved over to the Diesel section. Went to America to assess the GM Diesels available from there, and then the Henschel Diesels from Germany. Then assisted in the buying of GM Diesels for South Africa and the Henschels (called the Red Devils!) for Namibia.

I can still recall his journeys he had - he would collect each and every unit at the harbour, and escort them by train line to Middelburg where he handed these over to the manager who would deliver these then to Germiston depot.

Apparently in the days of the "switch over" to Diesel the electric and steam units would refuse to "dim" their head lights when they recognised an oncoming Diesel unit at night - they were concerned that diesels would put them all out of a job ....... and today, the opposite is true.

Was ook al daar. Baie goeie memories.

Oi, ek moet soontoe!

Het met die stoomtreine en trokke grootgeword.

Baie trein gery as skoolkind. Plaas toe, Pretoria toe, waarookal.

Met die halwe bus/bees lorrie vele kere tussen tuisdorp en Chrissiesmeer gery plaas toe. Die voertuig het tussen Breyten en Oshoek gery (Swaziland grenspos).

Baie herinneringe.

Hi George
Hope the weather in the area allows you to go on your trip with Outeniqua Power Vans - we have done 2 trips up the mountain above George as well as the one to Groot Brakrivier. Both very pleasant.

The railway display in George is probably the best you will see of its kind anywhere else in the country. It's a pity that George railway station has been allowed to fall apart.

Been there--done it. ( Talking about the bathroom )

Who has been to the Sandstone Estates near Ficksburg? This is the place to go to experience working machines from yesteryear. Locomotives and rolling stock on narrow gauge and standard guage take you for trips. Even a Sherman Tank.

Attended the Festival years ago and I read a lot of new working exhibits are now on display. Wanted to go this year (coincides with the Cherry Festival) but unfortunately things did not work out. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Since there is no response to my question I assume no one here has ever been to Sandstone. I wonder if anyone took the trouble to explore their comprehensive website. You will see they also offer camping accommodation.

Thanks for the heads up Hendrick.

Did not know it existed. My wife had shown me a pic of the loco on a flat-bed, bells started ringing....

Fascinating collection....

Looks well worthy of a visit, with convenience of a campsite.
