4 months and 22days to go [at the time of wrting ] to putting the tools down, [ i was going to say putting them away, but i know ill take them out from time to time ] and the profits of doom are every where , look at the rand they tell me, we in a recession i over hear them say, do you have enough money im asked, the markets are not performing i read. and i think to myself , when would be a good time to retire, when fuel drops below  R 10 a liter , when the markets are returning 12% all year round, when the rand comes in at 7 to 1. that would be a great time to retire wouldnt it, truth be told, thats never going to happen, so when would be a good time to retire, well, in 4 months and 22days its going to be a good time to retire. regardless of what the doomsday preppers are saying,we just have to manage the risk and adjust accordingly, i told my finance manager once that when i die there should not be more 10 bucks left in my bank account, give me that day he said and ill plan it like that, and  i certainly dont intend being the richest man in the cemetry either. so how does one balance these things out, how much is enough money is simular to that piece of string story. i guess its like ecard toller says , we need to live in the "now" we cannot worry about circumstances we have no control over, we just have to continue re adjusting around the   " now " because one day for sure the" now" is going to be" gone".so now would be a good time to retire.

We can only hope to have a comprehensive "bank account of memories".

People we enjoy interacting with and amazing places we have visited.

And Bitcoin to hedge against the weakening Rand.... LOL I just couldn't resist ...

There is no better time than right now. You will be amazed with how little you can survive when returning. Take a long term view on your investments and you will see that a 10%+ growth is not far out. That will leave you with a 5% real growth.

Like the administrator said....start building memories.

George

Since you wrote this you are already one day closer to d-day.

Like Heindrich says, you will be surprised how little you really need. This is of course given that you have no capital debt.

Long term views on investment, live in the moment and cherish the memories made.

hi proffie, we have been debt free for little over 15 years now, you and heindrich above speak the same laugauge as my finance guy, he always "talks" about long term views on investments. im learning to see what he sees, im a tradesman have always been, so when he talks to me he knows he got to break it up into layman terms. im very fortunate that my finance guy is my younger brother, he runs his own consulting company, and i got to say that over the years that he has managed my finances he has been nothing short of " genius "

Hy wil nou huis koop, nog altyd gehuur of in n staats huis gebly.

Vandag? Wat maak jy met dit? Bele en kry R5000 fo R7000 as jy gelukkig is per maand?

On George's original subject, you should remember that some deductions stop the moment you go on pension, such as your pension deduction and perhaps annuity deduction. Also you probably will be in a lower tax bracket meaning your taxes will be lower.  Depending on how you arranged your life insurance, these payments should also end round about the time of your retirement and you might get some insurance pay outs, which is untaxed.  Then you do not have daily transport costs and other expenses to earn your living.  At age 65 the amount deductable for medical expenses also increases quite dramatically meaning you will have more in your pocket. It all boils down to the fact that although your pension will be less than your salary, you would not necessarily be in a much worse financial position at retirement. You might even be better off depending on how long you invested in your pension.

Die vorige 30 plus jare se pensioen is elders bele by verskillende fondse/beleggings opsies.

Hennie, Dis wat 'n verstandige man doen.

Just to update Fred's tax rates on the one third encashment. Currently they are:

Tax free on 1st R500 000 = 0

18% from R500k to R700k = 36

27% from R700k to R1 050k = 94.5

36% above R1 050 000 = 342

therefore total Tax on R2m is R472.5 ie 23.6%

Fred.

(Pas my geldjies self oplaughing)

Richard, I guesstimated the tax at 1/3 calculated on the 1.5MR which according to your figures is about 28% so it is not far from my 1/3.  My point is that R472 thousand rand is quite a large amount to loose and one you will probably not regain even with good investments. For the last couple of years real returns on investments have been quite low and there does not seem to be any indications that this will change soon. Pension funds at the moment are struggling to increase pensions at inflation related percentages and your own investments likely will do no better.  I therefore think it is better to only withdraw the tax free amount instead of your allowable 33.3%.  If you were able to carry over the 1/3rd to a living annuity without loosing any by way of tax, that would be perfect, but as far as I know, SARS unfortunately does not allow this.

Sorry to have digressed too far from the string.

the topic has certainly made for some intreasting reading, tax taking centre stage on most peoples list, what are the thoughts on medical aid, the current way it works for me right now is the company pays half and i pay half monthly  [only the two of us on ] when i go of at the end of the year i intend keeping the same scheme the difference being i then pay for it in full which equates to 25% of my then income and of course it will increase every year. probaly exceding the rate of ones income, however i dont believe i/we have a choice as i equaly dont believe that goverment health care in its current state is an option. retirement could realy get riskier fast in that direction.

two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

George

I also counted the months down before I retired and from 22 I wrote the months down on my offices' white board. When I did hit the 40 days mark I starting marking the days and the last week I marked the hours left every morning. I think it is a good thing as it mentaly assists you to be ready for the big step you will be taking.

On one of my best friend's funeral letter his children wrote down the valueble things he taught them and number 3 was: "When is enough now enough"

If you lesten to the "doomsday peppers" as you call them "enough will never be enough".

After 3 year on retirement I can vouch for you that it is the best occupation I had in my career.

Enjoy counting down the days. It is like going camping for the holidays at the coast. The holiday already starts on the way there.

George

enjoy the count down, I have pencilled in end of March 2019, my only problem is, is/when is enough enough...!!?? I agree with you, head down and go for it...

Fred

I believe you can move the taxable encashment tax free to a new RA vehicle. Also by using a 'new age' RA one can make use of the 27.5% retirement saving tax deduction if you have spare money to invest. (your quesstimate of 1/3 was close, I was just clarifying the current tax breaks vs the previous average tax rates)

People we enjoy interacting with and amazing places we have visited.

And Bitcoin to hedge against the weakening Rand.... LOL I just couldn't resist ...

Bitcoin me thinks falls in the category of "too good to be true"! See today its now dropeped about 80% in value from a few months ago...some compare this as similar than the big "dot com" crash of around 2000. Me thinks bitcoin is a sure fire way to loose a lot of money quickly :)

Fred.

(Pas my geldjies self oplaughing)

Sorry, my 2c worth.

From the posts here-in it can be seen that all our positions are unique.

As I neared pension I made sure I was debt free and did not take a lumpsum to ensure my pension was maximum.

One must remember that it takes a huge amount of self discipline not to draw from the lumpsum, if taken.

Some of us pensioners have a monthly breakfast and one points out that the first year may go to plan, but 10 years later ....... ?????? One cannot plan that far in advance. Hence not taking the lumpsum is the best option in my mind.

If possible lumpsum should not be used to pay debt .... debt is eventually paid off and has the effect of increasing disposeable income at a later date when more appreciated and also better future value of the pension fund.

George,  my husband and I retired in 2017 and have been doing Full Timing since November 30th 2017.   Sold up lock stock and barrell and we've never missed our house or anything that went with it.    We're living our dream "Goodbye Tension Hello Pension" and its amaing how much one can do with much less than when we both worked.   Life is simplified to a large extent. We are very well set up in our rig with all the mod-cons. I even baked my Christmas cake in my mini oven last year and it was fantastic.   The freedom this life gives is worth far more than a huge bank balance.   As long as one can get by and pay your way, you also make sacrifices if and when  resources are restricted.   It's like when we first got married, minimal furniture in a tiny one bedroom flat;  48 years later, we still as happy as larks in our little nest at the ocean.   As a good friend and adviser once said to us, never mind about the "what if's, take hold of your freedom number and fly" - and that's what our retirement as Full Timers means to us.    Home is where we park it. So don't allow the naysayers to cramp your decisions;  take every advantage of living YOUR dream  as soon as you are able.   Good luck.

hi helen, that was a paragraph very well written, we have 2 months and 25 days to go , we are starting our full time adventure on the first of febuary next year, like you we have sold almost every thing in the house, we just have the bare basics to get by untill we leave, we live in a company house meaning we just walk out when the time comes, we have the same caravan as you guys which we have tried and tested and altered and fine tuned our set up on a 10 day trip earler on this year, this adventure has been 5 years in the making, 5 years of planing and plotting and trying to imagine all the senerios that may come our way, and of course speaking to and learning from those who , like your selves are out there. our first stop at richards bay caravan park has already been booked , our test trip was done at richards bay ski boat club as we are members there , this gave us the oppertunity to go check the caravan park out , speak to those who were there at the time and pick and book our site. we planing on spending up to 6 months there as we want to spend some time at sea with the boat honning our skills to catch those fish that always elude us when we are there on short trips. margate caravan park is on the drawing board for our second stop, however we want to do a recce there before finalizing, we plan to do a recce up front on all our percieved stops, dont want to book into a park only to find it not what we wanted. would like to know more about your travells so far, where are you now , where did you spend chrismas, where you going next,

thanks

george

Sounds very interesting.  Margate though, is not so nice anymore.  Why don't you look at TO Strand at Port Edward just a few kilos further south.  I suppose you are looking for a longer stay and I haven't got any info on this for either TO Strand or Margate.  There are also other parks in the area, one at I think Glenmore, which probably is also a good bet. FlipnTilla managed that one for a time.  You might do good to visit their website.  They seem to have been just about everywhere and give reliable reviews.  And they are doing exactly what you intend to do.  See

hi fred, margate came on the radar cause they have realy good long term rates for pensioners and there rates remain the same over the xmas period. although i will still go and check the park out first next year, any input you could give me on the park [ good or bad ] would be helpful. flip en tilla managed fairhills at ramsgate for a while but have since moved on, good pensioner rates , regret out of season only.

George, I have no information about caravan parks in Margate as such.  I only have the impressions I gained by visiting there from TO Strand, where we have camped a few times.  Every time we went there, the town seems a bit more tatty and I would not want to stay there.  I cannot remember reading anything about Margate lately, so perhaps the deduction can be made that few of the Forum members have been camping there, but I might be wrong.  Perhaps someone with personal knowledge will give you something more substantial.  If you do go there for a look-see next year, please give us your impressions.

This  topic has been a very interesting  read, It is really sad to see how  many people  have    "spent" their pension before they retired.

You'll never never know if you never never go

Sonder Jesus is ek niks! ! ! !

Dis so waar, soos ekself almeer besef.
