Porta potty chemicals
Good morning, Fellow Campers.
We have a Porta Potty which we use for emergencies (No.1) as we normally use the ablutions provided by the resort.
At the moment we are using cheap chemicals and find that they are not effective as the smells are not completely eliminated. I would like to use Thetford, but not only are they rather scares, they cost a fortune. That being said, I am willing to pay for a good quality chemical but only if it is effective.
Can anyone advise me as to what I can try and where to source it?
Kind regards
Walter
We use Domestos, a little in the bottom tank mixed with water and a bit more Domestos in the top tank also mixed.
You need to experiment with the top tank mixtures til you get it right, we stayed at Swadinie for 15 days using the pottie for No 1 and no smells
Thanks Captiva, I will do a little experimenting with Domestos.
We use WALEX-Portapack the Lavender smell readily available from Outdoor Warehouse. I did buy it from Camp-Life in PTA as well. This product is very good so much so that when you use the toilet the lavender smell will fill the caravan.
It is a sachet that you drop in the black water tank with 0.5L of water. No need to add extra chemicals in the flush tank.

We use the professional blue liquid used in the mobile chemical toilets you find at shows and markets. In our opinion it works better than the small bottles you buy at camping shops. It comes in 5 liter containers under different names at a fraction of the cost per liter of the small quantities. Thete is much less smell as well.

I contacted my local Sanitech branch. They informed me that they WOULD NOT sell me PORTABLE TOILET chemicals if I could not provide a "Certificate of Disposal" from the Municipal treatment plant. They are apparently toxic to the environment.
They advised me to get proper Porta Potty chemicals. I heeded the Professionals advice. For R350, I am not throwing poison down the camps soak away. Surely Domestos or Jik is not good for the camps soak away either.
I know some caravan parks like Mountain Splendour which have septic tanks have a special disposal for porta potty as the chemicals so that they don't go into and effect their septic tank.
I assume that if the caravan park has septic tanks then they would/should have a different disposal for the porta potty.
We use Flavoured Jik, mixed with Flavoured Gel and only for No: 1 and get washed and cleaned every morning.
NO SMELLING PE!.

Yes the normal Porta Potty chemicals is not Septic Tank friendly. The WALEX Porta-pack product with the sachet's is environment friendly. (Stipulated on the packs)

I have for the past few years used chemicals from Richbay chemicals comes in 5lit containers no smells at all. Which reminds me I need to restock. Last purchase lasted a few years.
Toilchem for the bottom tank and All Fresh for the top tank
Toilchem R 65,01 + VAT
Allfresh R 98,21 + Vat
That is for 5Lit of each from Richbay Chemicals.
I have found it unnecesssary to put chemicals in the bottom tank. Previously using the chemicals from camping shops sold in 200ml bottles there was unwelcome smells even using the two different fluids. I think we are taken for a ride with these expensive fluids while the much cheaper 5l bottles are much more effentive as well as being much more economical.
Whether they are harmful to sewage systems I don't know but my assumption is that there is a porta potty station without any warnings, it is safe to empty your pora potty.

We bought 5L of Porta-T from our friends SuperChem Soap Shop in Phalaborwa for R233. Ask for Wendy or Michael. They also have 1L bottles. They are permanents in Forever Safari Park.

The disposal points in the camps are just rigged for convenience. The dump all goes to the same place. I do believe all portable toilet chemicals are now formalin free..... ~~~septic tank friendly.
Dumping it in the toilet just has the risk of making a mess and it is more complicated/dellicate.

Paul
