mapungubwe and caravans
Hi . we plan to camp at Mapungubwe in August, with our Palma caravan. Has anybody been there recently? What are the road conditions like now? Is it possible to get to the camping site with a normal caravan( in one piece!). Sanparks say yes its OK( I emailed them). But I am not sure......
Hi and welkom to the forum.
I do not know the area, but am sure that someone will be able to answer you.
On The Road Again
We spent 5 nights there last May. The road from the turnoff to the camp site is through the farm lands and is corrugated. This is for about 8km. Once you enter the boom to go into the park it is sand track through the bush to the camp site. We drove slowly and did not have any problems. The camp site has 10 sites that are cut into the bush, each with a braai and tap. You must have sufficient petrol as the closest is Messina or Alldays. There is no shop in the vicinity so take everything with you. This is a great camp, peaceful and in the bush. The camp site is separate from the main Mapangubwe park. We spent time in the park where the campsite is based, and it has a great bird hide. We also went for a day trip to the main site and really enjoyed the sites there as well. This park is really worth a visit.
Thanks for the reply, flintstones. Which caravan were you towing in Mapungubwe?
We were towing our Gypsey Regal, with our Nissan Double Cab.
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated
We are planning to go to Mapungubwe towards the end of the month. We last went there in 2023 (without caravan) and the tar road from Vivo via Alldays to Mapungubwe was quite badly potholed. The dirt road from Pont Drift to the camp site was corrugated but doable with a road caravan. Wouldn't it be better to take the N1 to Musina and then turn west to Mapungubwe?
Has anybody been there recently with a on-road caravan?
Groete,
Paul
I was in Alldays on Friday. Luckily used the Isuzu and not my NP200.
I have driven this road 100 times during the past 2 years with a Quantum bus.
This is the worst that I have seen the road. My NP200 would not have been able to go into Alldays. Road is completely disintegrated. As a matter of fact there is no road as you get into Alldays. So i do believe the road to Pontdrift will be worse.
I would recommend plan your trip via Mussina
At last !!!!

Just a last warning, the Limpopo river is in flood.
More rain expected for the rest of the week from Polokwane to that area as a matter of fact Heavy rain expected
At last !!!!

Thanks Hannes. Because of the rain and mud I might just postpone my trip but then go via Musina.
Groete,
Paul
My timing is good. I am planning a trip in July so good to know of the Alldays route. We will be camping at Mazhou - Land Cruisers anda Conqueror Commander.
I am looking for information in respect of routes / tracks. I was last there in 2017.
The image below os from Tracks for Africa. I am considering buying the GPS maps which cover this area.
Legend:
Pink: National Road R 572
Brown: Main Gravel Road
Dotted Brown and White: Main Offroad
The fact that T4A has the tracks does not denote that are usable or that you have permission to use them Gates for example could be locked and I do not want to tresspass on someone elses property.
Are all of the Main Gravel and Offroads currently accessible with a 4 x 4 (diff locks all round)
In particular from the image below the dotted track. In 2017 it was not great but my VX 80 got through comfortably.
In the image above, the same area. The white dot on blue is the one I am particularly interested in.
One Life. Drive it!
Drove to Mussina this morning from Polokwane. The N1 is in good condition
At last !!!!
