wilk caravans
There seems to very little advice about Wilk caravans in these forums.
For example, consumer reports of the various models, the suitable size and weight for tow vehicles.
I would want to buy a 4 bed (1 double) with bathroom enclosure and possible a/c and TV. the possible vehicle would be someting like a Jeep 2.4, or a 3l double cab with low consumption, for about R100 000.
your advice will be appreciated.
Dudley,
The Wilk Caravans are no longer in production. That might be the reason you can't find any current details for these caravans. We had a Wilk Amathyst with all your requirements, and used a 2.8 Isuzu diesel to tow it with. The only problem we had with the van was some wood rot in one panel. We had this replaced and resealed without any problem thereafter. Our van still had a Gas Geyser which played up at times, but nothing to really complain about. I still think they were the nicest vans ever.
Dudley, I live 10 minutes away from Kennis Caravans, a big dealer in SA and one that dealt in plenty of Wilks.
If you need a spying eye , give me a call when the time comes.
thank you that is very informative. I will probably go for a Sprite as Wilk has been discontinued.
Do you have any suggestions for a towing vehicle to tow a Sprite Sprint or Sport? I am still keen on a Jeep as these have a good reputation in South East Asia.
Thank you for your offer, Duncan.

You should also keep an eye on the classifieds section on this forum there are plenty of caravans listed there.
There are six Wilks listed here http://www.caravanparks.com/index.php?component=classifieds&browse=97
Dudley, if you look on this website you will find Caravan Specs on the left hand side. Just click on them and they expand to include the last 20+ years. Very useful.
Jeeps are well regarded as tow vehicles here as well....BUT...be careful which one you opt for. From what I have seen the petrol versions are a nightmare as far as consumption goes when towing.
Basically anything over 2 litres in Diesel (engine size) will handle most medium to largish caravans.
If you are going to be touring for an extended period, I would personally not look at a pop top. And I say this as a fan of them. By pop-top I mean a caravan where the entire roof lifts. If it was me, I would spend R40k on a Sprite Musketeer (I just saw an ad for a good condition 1988 model for R30k). They have an oven, stove, bathroom etc. Then just spend the balance of your budget customising it with A/C, flatscreen etc, modify the bed if needed. You will still walk away with change. With a solid roof there is less chance of leaks when using it for an extended period, and it will feel more spacious inside as it is higher.
thanks, that certainly is an attractive proposition.
Hi
We had a 1981 Wilk Emerald for over 20 years : I loved that old girl!! She was extremely comfortable on site, but heavy to tow....we towed her with Ford falcon, Opel Record and the 4l Ford Ranger.
We sold her last year in order to buy our little Gypsey, but by then the Wilk was defintely showing serious wood-rot ( something quite typical for Wilks I believe ). The guy who bought it spent a little getting it fixed, and now he has many happy years of caravnning ahead with her.

Hey Duncan : the Emerald we had was bought new from Kennis ( by my Dad )....;-) I think that they were the principal dealers.....
Indeed, they were the only dealers for some time in Wilk.
Also used wilk 3 in a row, very nice and spaceshes
Good day
I just get myself a 1991 Wilk Topaz to repair as a project.
Do any one know where i can get some spares for it.
I am in gauteng area.
