I will be visiting Kgalagadi in December for 6 days and plan a day trip from Mata Mata into Namibia. I have all the info on documents and fees for vehicles crossing the border. Is there also a fee per person payable? I would appreciate info. Do you know of a good lodge with about 80 km radius from Mata Mata. I have been to the farm stall down the road.

Many Thanks

Paul

Het altyd so 3 of 4 ekstras in my kar!

Hi Paul,

No, there is not a pp payable fee.

The crossing fee is about R 300.00.

This you will do at Twee Rivieren and exit the Park at Mata Mata.

You need to stay at least two nights in the Park to use Mata Mata Border Post, so your six days will stand you in good stead. The RSA Rand is taken anywhere in the country and uses the same exchange rate that we use. Fuel is nearly R 2,00 p/l cheaper there than you would pay in RSA.

It does not make sense to go into Namibia for a single day. It does not make economical sense, as Namibia is the most friendly country to visit and is situated right on your door step. We visit this destination yearly and have driven just about every road and track in the country. We are returning in six months time.

Be aware that you may not take fresh meat and vegetables over the Border, especially if there has been a Foot & Mouth, Swine Flu, Bird Flu or Fruit Fly outbreak, anywhere in the RSA.

If RSA is declared a safe zone, you can take up to 25 kg of fresh meat, as well as fruit or vegetables over the border without any problems.

Namibia has very good meat which is better priced than out big centers, so it makes more sense to purchase your meat there. Vegetables are more reliable in the bigger centers, but not good in most of the smaller towns.

There are three lodges within 70 km from the Mata Mata Border Post. They are the Kalahari Lodge, Donkerhoek Lodge as well as Terra-Rouge. The last Lodge also has a camp site and there is also the Sun Set Safari camp site with self catering units. If you decide to do this and have a 4x4 vehicle, then drive the D 503 road, which is very scenic and very nice to drive. It will take you onto the C 11 for nearly 80 km to Aroab in the south, then the C 16 will take you to the Rietfontein Border Post, which becomes tar to Askam and back to Upington. The D 503 has a number of gates to go through, but do not let this put you off.

You can do this route with a high clearance vehicle, but I would suggest you at least be accompanied by a proper 4x4 with low range. This is because, if you need to pull off the road to let another vehicle pass, you may have to do a bit of digging, to get you back onto the track.

Although this would be a great adventure, I would advise you to do a complete holiday in Namibia, as it has a lot of lovely vistas and is a perfect tourist destination which is set for tourism. It is much safer than our own country to visit, but do be aware of your immediate surroundings in the bigger cities and towns. A very good guide is GO Namibia - available in all the outdoor stores and magazine outlets, in the RSA, which has a lot of information about this destination.

Hi

Thank you for all the helpful info. I will have a look at the suggested lodges. We have toured Namibia before from Mata Mata and stayed at Red Dunes Lodge (camping on the dunes). We have two days in Mata Mata and just thought to pop in Namibia for "change of scenery" and as a surprise for one of our group members. We are planning a second trip to Namibia and will then have a look at your suggestions. (Maybe I will knock on your door again for some tips).

Dis darm baie goedkoper as ander plekke.

Wonder of hulle daar ook omkoop geld vat.

Sal nie verbaas wees nie.
