I have a Sprite Swing Pop up Roof, My wife and I are planning a tour from Durban down to the Western cape and back, we are planning numerous one night stops and thought of mounting one of the fixed mount Pull Out awnings as apposed to erecting the standard Rally Awning. Has anyone done this and how is it mounted so as not to impede the erection of the full tent, do you mount it on the Pop up or on the van itself. Comments Appreciated

Nigel Jan Meyer of Durban also installed one on his Swing. I am sure he will be able to give you all the information you need and he is only a short drive from you.

Geert.
Ek hou van jou opset. Dit lyk netjies. Waar het jy die Howling Moon gekoop en kos hy n arm en n been?
Ons drink uit die piering want ons koppie loop oor.

I also have the 4.1m Leisure Awning from Howling moon on the Exclusive. If I don't plan on using it I simply slide it out of the tent groove on the door side and slide it back on the other side of the caravan. I use it for weekends or when touring Kruger when spending 2 nights per camp.

Some photos (not mine) from the interwebs

My brother in law bought one with side and front panels from Canvas and Aluminium Consepts for his 1993 Super Sport.

With a setup like that with side and front panels, you can actually leave your side tent or rally at home.

The setup is really suitable and big enough for 2-People.

The panels are also removable.

Its not a retractable awning...you have to roll it up by hand(as per picture provided by Dieter...bottom picture

You have to remove the awning to put up the rally tent. Also slide it off and on to the back of my van when using the full ent. My awning is permanent on my van and I also have sides and front to make it a full tent.

Nigel, I have a used 3.5m awning that I don't  want to sell but you are welcome to phone me on 0828982939 to possible borrow it for your trip.

Hi I would like to fit a 270deg awning to my Sprite Scout and was wondering if it is possible and the 90deg bend would possibly impede my using the original tent.

Hi I would like to fit a 270deg awning to my Sprite Scout and was wondering if it is possible and the 90deg bend would possibly impede my using the original tent.

Dean it would be possible to mount a 270 degree awning to your Sprite. But there are a few things to take in consideration and this would probably make you think twice doing it:

  • You will have to mount it above the roping section in which you will normally slide the tent or rally.
  • The awnings comes some with leg poles and other without.  The ones with the leg support are a bit lighter that those without. Something to consider when mounting the awning to wood and travel with it.
  • The brackets are to be constructed in such a way that they spread the load over a bigger mount area than normal. Because on a vehicle you attach the awning to steel of some sort and on your caravan it is just wood.
  • Consider the weight of the awning, the way you would mount it, mounting it onto wood and not steel, all that while it being bounced around during towing.
  • The brackets must also not be in the way of the popup roof when you lower it.
  • Anything mounted on the caravan side roof support should be sealed properly at the time of fitment. And with it bouncing during towing any leaks are possible.
  • The awning will be mounted higher that normal.  Thus if it comes with leg poles they will be to short.  You will need to extend them some how.

So can can see something like this to be done.  Will I do it........................... probably not.

Sonder Jesus is ek niks! ! ! !
