The correct towball height for the Sprite, Gypsey. Wilk and the current Jurgens range is 400 mm from the ground to the top of the towball. Bear in mind that this height will be affected when weight - such as occupants and holiday gear is loaded into the car. You may have to opt for a drop-plate (an adaptor plate available in various sizes) to gain the correct towball height.

Thanks for that ZZZ

I have been towing for years and never bothered to measure - if the rig looked fairly level, I was happy!

I  don't know if this is correct. We parked the caravan and tow vehicle on a level surface, loaded.  Then put a level on the A frame, adjusted the jockey wheel until level showed the A frame/caravan was level. Then we fitted the ball on the tow hitch with a plate accordingly.    ??????   Now it is always level.

We were advised that the front should be slightly lower than the rear, but we are happy with the towing now. We did have a problem before but it was the tyre pressure. We were also advised that the rear tyres of the tow vehicle pressure must be the same as the caravan's wheel preasure. Once we did this the sway we had disappeared. It worked for us.

Tyre pressures are very critical as you can imagine a tyre wall that is flexible due to under pressure will be affected by the weight of the load and the vehicle will similarly be affected by that force pushing it and start the chain reaction of sway multiplied by other wrong factors ie load distribution ,caravan stance etc

Towball height measurement it relative measurement as it allways depends on the tow vehicle. Yes you could go with the 400mm if you tow with a Bakkie. But this is not possible when towing with a car as the suspension is not that stiff.

Best rule of thumb is that the caravan should always be towed level, or with the nose slightly down.

As Leon suggested, a wee bit nosedown is the rule, but you cannot state the actual measurement, will differ from 13" to 14" to 15" vans, and then also from vehicle to vehicle, and as Anthony say, correct pressure on the wheels is also critical, but at all times the best stability is slightly nose down, and that has been the "rule" for many years.  I read articles in the Caravan & Outdoor Life mag in 1984 about the subject.

Are these measurements for a laden or unladen vehicle? In other words, if Jurgens suggest 420mm from ground to tow ball, is that for an unladen vehicle? How much do you compensate for load?

These would be ready for the road. Sag when loaded will be different for each vehicle so we stick to the loaded ball height.

Het in my geval 'n 4 gat sakplaat by Midas op Malelane raakgeloop.

Nou loop my wa effens neus af wanneer gelaai.

So ter inligting.
