John, I have had an unpleasant experience trying to sell my timeshare at Magalies Park (MP) after 10 years of ownership.  They would not buy it back and had also changed to a points system. To have enough points I needed to pay in some RK33 having initially paid RK21 for the week.   I had no joy using my timeshare to book a week elsewhere in SA through RCI as RCI had no weeks at resorts when I wanted one.  It cost me the annual levy at MP of RK6000+, membership at RCI at near R800 pa,  plus a R1000 admin fee when I used RCI to book a week which was available in the USA at Disney World in Florida.

The timeshare business does not cater for campers.  I could thus not book a stand at Mbwalingwe.

I eventually gave my week away for free as I also did not want to saddle my kids with the issue of paying for this "wonderful" inheritance daddy left them.

You may have read about or seen the issues with timeshare and Vacation Clubs in SA.

If you want to sell your week, you need to tell the prospective buyer what the current annual levy is, the cost of belonging to and then using an agent such as RCI or some other agent in Natal (why are these time share or Holiday Club(s) agents all in Natal?).   The selling agents for time shares are also in Natal.

Also advise the potential buyer that using the week at Manyane every year is fine BUT do not expect to easily acquire a week elsewhere using the exchange system these  clubs and their Vacation Ownership Association of South Africa brag about.

Good luck with your sales effort.  I sincerely hope you have success.

Regards

All the best with this one John.  My parents gave their Timeshare back without any compensation just to get rid of the yearly levies and the hazzle of Timeshare thing. None of our kids were interested to take it over.

This is a camping forum and members here mainly use caravans and tents to enjoy the outdoors.

You will be very lucky if you get a positive response from here.

Best of luck

Timeshare in any way, shape or form is a definite no-no for me. Many years ago, before my wife and I got married, she bought a week  at Perna Perna St. Lucia, and had to also just give it back without any compensation three years later due to escalating levies and and and...

Mother-in-law also bought years later, went onto the point system, and eventually got rid of it by giving it back without any remuneration.

I wish you all the best John for trying to sell yours, truely!

A happy life doesn't just happen, it's something you create yourself...

unfortuanetly, i have inherit the point system from my parents, and needless to say it is not worth it. it is a bottom less pit and the levies is absolutely a disgrace. if i would have taken all the yearly levies already paid, i could have bought a new off roader caravan cash by now.

this time share / point system is a scam and just a money making activity.

i wish i could get rid of this s.....!

Jan, due to the "name" timeshare got over the years you will be very lucky if you get anything for it. The only way to realy get rid of it is to write a letter to the coverning body stating that you do not want this "timeshare" any more due to following reasons. You can not afford the levies and the kids are not interrested in taking over the levies.

They will expect of you to have paid all levies in full with no outstanding amounts. In such a case I will have made sure to use the timeshare atleast for that year to get something out of the deal.

Directly after the trip send the letter in and clearly state that you do not want anything in return and that they must just confirm in writing that your membership has been cancelled.  This is the way we handled my parents timeshare.  After two months my mother got a letter that the timeshare has been cancelled.

Yes, initial money wasted, but no one has foreseen the levies to mount up to such large amounts. There should have been a capped amount pre-determined.

The thing with the levies are that the amount you pay for levies start to exceed the  cost if you were to make a booking with out using the Holiday points.

That is what happened with the timeshare my parents had. I was prepared to take it over with new lower levy as I am a new owner and the levy must be capped to a certain amount.

Clearly this did not go with RCI as it was the only way to get rid of old members and make space for new ones. Remember one of the marketing "foefies" was that you can transfer ownership to kids in your will. Kids by then will not be interrested due to the % rise in levies over the years.

Thank you to all the members for the feedback and comments ; we have had the timeshare since 2001 ; we never used the points system of RCI or any other points system elsewhere ;we just have used  the fixed week NR24 in july/august ; if we cannot sell privately for what it is worth then we dont sell at all.

But we are also campers and have upgraded from tents to an off road caravan 3 years ago !

Best regards to all !
