hi we are booked in to richards bay caravan park for the june holidays and we were wondering what the best route is to get there? also what the roads are like?

if you could help us i would appreciate it. we are towing a sprite supersport with a honda crv and we are concerned about the roads as it has been many years since we've driven that way.

thank you

Ek het self jare laas die pad gery. My broer ry die pad as ware maandeliks enesleep n ski boot of karavaan.

we have recently travelled from richards bay to weltevreden park and back again, via piet retief,  ermelo , bethal , the road is all good. first 30kms out of piet retief towards pongola is quite bumpy [ badly laid tar ] but you just go a little slower there.

Travel the N4 towards Witbank and Middelburg.  Just after Middelburg turn right off the N4 towards Ermelo.  Road is good just watch out for large heavy vehicles as the first strech is dragline country for coals and the area after Ermelo is logger country.

Then after Pongola watch out for cattle/animals in the road. As George stated road is good apart from uneven tar here and there.

Hi Leon.

My broer ry seker weekliks daai pad oppad Ermelo toe.  Kan detail by hom kry as iemand dit sou wou hê.

the road from ermelo to piet retief is good, from piet retief to pongola is good apart from the first 30kms is quite bumpy, no holes, just realy badly laid tar, the last 20kms into pongola there are two mountain passes to cross over, quite long and quite steep towards the top of the second one, i normaly pull my exclusive over there in 2nd gear.the road from pongola to richards bay is perfect, there are no toll roads between ermelo and richards bay.

Julle sal fine wees. Ry op die aanbevole spoed, ry mooi en wees altyd versigtig op ons paaie. Geniet daai vakansie en laat weet ons hoe dit met julle gaan

Loaded like that it will be 7½ hours. Did the N17 route at Christmas and it is as mentioned above.

Try and stop every two hours or 200km witch ever comes first, remember you are on holiday, and remember comming back will take longer or at least feel like it so again the two rule , dont know why  it's due to going to the highveld ?

Yes you are on holiday the moment you get in behind the wheel.  Your van (holiday house) is with you, so why be in a hurry.

If you see a monument pull of and stop there. You will never get in your vehicle and drive to that monument just for the sake of visiting it.  Do it while you are in the area.

Thank you everyone for your advice and assistance. i sincerely appreciate it. the reason i ask about the time is the first long trip we did should've been 7 hours and it took us 12. we stopped 3 times for about 20 mins a time and had a long wait at one tollgate but it still took us a lot longer than it would've in a car without a caravan. so if a car takes 7.5 hours then I am assuming it will take us 12 again? my dad can't go over 100 otherwise she sways too much. am i wrong in estimating it to be that amount of time?
