Hi all,

Does anyone own a 500 SE V8 that they use for towing. How does it feel to tow.

I should think that the vehicle motor should have good power for the tow.  The real question is how will the rear suspension cope with the towing weight.

What do you intend to tow?

I have seen various older Mercedes models tow caravans and do it with much success.  The guy that bought my Jurgens Classique tows the caravan with a Mercedes. Can not remember the model though.

Hope there is someone on the forum that can shed more light on the model you mentioned.

Had a 350SE at one stage(around 1985-91) and successfully towed WILK Emerald  for couple years. Great car with abundant power and space!! However, extremely heavy on petrol and very soft rear suspension. At the time added MONROE ride adjusters (rear shocks you could pump-up to counter sagging) as well as had heavy duty radiator and heavy duty oil cooler fitted-thereafter only a pleasure! The 500SE should have similar towing character but with marginally more power. Auto box had only three forward ratios-might be the reason for heavy consumption? Towed the Wilk from Pta to Cape Town (2x) to KNP on numerous occasions and various other destinations.

Wel looks like if you sort the rear suspention and do not worry about the fuel consuption you should have a okay tow vehicle.

Hi Guys,

Leon - Yes I intend on getting a good setup for the rear suspension and I am sure this car will pull almost anything. I have a Sprite Super Sport.

Lein - Thanks for the input, Wilke is known to be a heavy van so that means this is going to be great towing.

Fuel Consumption will be high no doubt but torque will be there for sure.

Sean (and others) in a previous part of our lifes (1985 to 1990) we had a Sprite Sunway, and had problems towing with a 1982 Chev Commodore (3.8), and stopped the sagging with GABRIEL heavy duty coils. But the power was not there for long distance towing.

We replaced the Chev with a '76 (I think) MB 350SE (V8). What a car.

Went up Magoebaskloof?  iin December heat, with Sunway on the tail, passing many Ford V6 cars and bakkies, and other vehicles, standing alongside the road with bonnets open to cool down. We just drove on, aircon on, and in style.

The MB rear coils were also replaced with the Gabriel heavy duty coils.

Just make sure from a reputable fitment centre how the alignment would be affected. Sometimes you might have the rear tires being eaten away uneven.

We NEVER had anything done to the radiator or cooling system. Never overheated.

From 2006 up to 2013 we used an C270CDI towing a Jurgens Esprit, much better on fuel than the 350SE, but otherwise a very capable vehicle.

The 500SE would be about 3.5 to 4 kilos per liter, should be more or less same as town driving.

Regards.

Frans

The Sprite Super Sport is not that heavy.  Try the first and second tow with out any changes to the rear suspension.

My Niece and her husband used to tow a Jurgens Expo during the nineties with a BMW Sport.  That suspension is very soft so try it before making big changes.

I can remember putting a few tennis balls inside the rear coil springs of my Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2l) towing a Sprite Sport, didn’t have the finances to install anything fancy!
