Hallo daar.

Ja selfone is die antwoord ("scuse the pun") 😁

As aktiewe radio man hoor ek dis stil op die radio.

Groete langs julle kampvuur!

Het so baie posies, tans n wenner vir my.

As jy wil he jou drome moet waar word, moet jy eers wakker word.

Dankie Chuck. Ek sal bietjie kyk daarna.

Ou c.b man en radio amateur kursus oppad.

A group of us use the UHF license free frequencies (at 4w, therefore licenced) with roof mounted antennae.  Have been abe to communicate 30-40kms in flat/line of sight.  I feel that when there is a group of you travelling together radio is far more effective and easier than hassling with a cellphone.  Especially in remote areas.

Hi Chris. Thanks for the info

Yes I love the radio chats etc but as I'm a solo traveler and radio equipment in my vehicle it just seem very quite on all frequencies. Wonder if it even worthwile paying the licence or just dump the lot and rely on the cell phone alone.

Greetings and a wonderful weekend there.

We use the VHF frequencies that are used by most of the Forums/Orra (Off Road Radio Association), as a paid channel. They are 25 w mobile radio's and the hand helds are 5 w radio's, that use the same frequencies/channels. The hand held and mobile are used to keep in contact with each other, whether it be in shops or on trails, or over obstacles, or scouting a feasable route to use. It is not always safe to leave your vehicle, when shopping in some areas, so radio communication helps a lot, if you do not have a sim card, for the area, you are transversing, or if there is no cell reception for where you are, when one of you is out shopping.

When traveling in convoy, in the bush or towns, it also assists where you do not see your travelling companions, turning off, or when getting caught at a red robot in towns and you lose line of sight of travel companions, so do not know if/where they turned off the road in use.

These radio's are also line of sight as Jin has mentioned, but a lot more effective than the old 27 & 29 Mhz and UHF radio's. Most of the Forums have a cost of about R 160,00 p/a for membership, as well as the radio lisence...

Hi Campervan.

Thanks for the input. I used to travel all over S.A and always had the radio ( multi band +_ 100w) in my "lorry".

As a solo oke out on the road it get boring so I fiddle with the radio. Got a lot of responses and good "chats"along the route. Truckers, C.B die hards.. etc.

On my recent trip down to Gariep nobody replied on various frequencies.

Maybe I must check my antenna!!🤣
