Hi All

Looking for advice again from all the folk with lots of experience, as I'm only about to start my caravanning lifestyle on 1 Apr for the 1st time

What do you guys all do for internet and data packages?

Im going to be on the road for a year and therefore need a good mobile internet / data solution but certainly cant afford satellite data solutions so Im looking for good ol Vodacom or Telkom mobile solutions with either uncapped or as many Gigs as possible, at a reasonable monthly cost - basically to watch Netflix on a laptop or just do some general web surfing to check out what caravan sites to head to next etc, as well as just always have noungh data needed to get by

Looking foreard to hearing what you guys all use?

Tghanks a mil again

Mark & Lesley

This is going to be interesting.

I assume it will have to be something like Vodacom data which has the widest mobile coverage and the required routers etc.

I tried a wifi router for the van so we can use it with our tablets and laptop.

Very slow. Was faster to use one of the tablets to act as hotspot.

Rather wait for those who have the answers. We do not do netflix etc. Just internet and Youtube etc.

120Gig at R470 is good..best I've found so far is Vodacom WiFi router 90Gig at R 449 pm, but Telkom tell me that Vodacom towers and infrastructure is better thanTelkoms

We camp all over the country and are also in contact with very many Full Timers.

Vodacom certainly have the best coverage, whilst Tellcom is very poor.

Suggest a Vodacom contract, with a Poynting high gain airial and router.

I once saw that package in December , 100GB ( 50GB during the day& 50GB night shift (12am to 5am). Vodacom has the best coverage, Telkom is only effective in urban areas.

There could be many answers and some will be outdated. Telekom are now roaming on Voda network so the experience will be 5 times better than in the past. Cellc I found no coverage in NKP but works as soon as you approach the various gates. Rain has lower coverage but their uncap for the 19h per day from 23h00 up to 18h00 is a winner. One just need to limit the use from 18h00 to 23h00 as it is charged R50 per GB. Make sure to check the coverage. Speed will vary a lot if one uses a older router like the HSDPA(3g)  but the signal will be affected by towers from one point to the next. Rain would be launching their E-SIM shortly and I have not seen the rates but coverage could be as it is now. The big plus with Rain is there is no contract and month to month.

If data usage is not high the Telekom options where data is valid for 6m or 12m could be an option. It does not seem the new law that data bought should not expire in less than 3 years is applied yet. Something to watch going forward.

Pottie did you compare a 4g/LTE router against the tablet as Hotspot as most phones and tablets are on LTE with newer SIMS as well. 3g is mostly 21Mbps as far as I have seen. Also the routers supplied on contracts are netware locked when bought from Voda. The same router cost more than double the price if it is open. I just checked it last weekend.

Danie

I bought a 4g/LTE router at R2300.

It is currently in a drawer at home. Cannot recall the name, but was apparently the way to go at that time in 2017.

The tablets work best for us. Link laptop to tablet as hotspot, do what I need to do and disconnect again.
