Hi Ash, my experience, to travel in a convoy is no problem. We travel in a convoy (4 to 5 caravans) down to TO Strand annually and always take into consideration the other motorists. We adopt the following principles:

1. When we stop at a petro port, we park where possible away from the parking area (actually by the truck stop) and there is always people that stay at the caravans while the others "go". Food is bought and eaten at the caravans.

2. On the road, we leave more than enough space between us for people to freely pass as they wish.

3. At the toll gates we spilt up as to not make a long que.

4. We stop every 2 hours or 200km.

Note: The person leading the convoy is to maintain a pre-determined speed that all are happy to safely tow at, obviously within the speed limits and determined by the weather and road  conditions as well.

Ash the big thing about traveling in convoy is that you must now make provision for the length of the convoy.

I have for instance experienced two vehicles traveling back from the Western Cape on the N1 holding up the traffic behind. They did this by Traveling very close to one another.

One was towing a caravan and the other a boat. The caravan combination traveled at 90-100Km/h with the boat combination traveling a very short distance behind the caravan.

Due to the heavy traffic on our roads during the festive season. The gap between vehicles traveling in the opposite direction only allows you to pass one vehicle at a time but because the boat combination was traveling so close to the caravan no one could pass any of the two and the traffic kept on piling up to the rear.

So just by a bit of planning and allowing large gaps between the vehicles you should not have trouble.  Put the slowest vehicle infront and take the pace from it.

If you can arrange for radio communication between the vehicles it makes the trip that more interresting and one can advise others with regards to on comming traffic  or even idiots passing dangerous from behind.

Try to keep the distance per day to about 400km so that you have great camping time on route. Traveling in convoy makes the camping experience that much better.

Want nou kuier julle sommer langs die pad ook. (Kuier net met verantwoordelikheid teenoor ander pad gebruikers want hulle is twee keer so haastig soos julle)

The convoy do attrack attention but to be honest its mostly of envy.  Specially if you are a great bunch and having a great time. Make the convoy traveling part of your holiday. If the convoy is 3 to 4 vehicles or more your calm will rub off on the people/travelers around you.

Give way because you are traveling a bit slower and you will find that some unknown person will come and chat to your group at the next Ultra City.

Last tip. During the festive season pull off on the Truckside of the 1 Stop or Ultra City. Unless you need to fill up with fuel.

Ashley. Ek sal baie meer gerus wees om in n konvooi te sleep. As iets fout gaan het jy back up. Jou kans om beroof te word minder. Dit is veiliger vir die hele familie.

Hou jul distansie ver genoeg uitmekaar. Twee rigting radios baie handig in die geval

Leeker en veilig sleep ou maat

Die is seker die grootste voordeel.  Hulp langs die pad ry eintlik saam met jou en die sekuriteit daaraan vat so aan sy gat.

If the small bakkie with the heavy trailer is part of the convoy and convoy rule is we travel together, you will have to wait for him in any case. So you not gonna get there either.

Let the slowest vehicle take the lead. He will do whatever to keep his best speed not to hold the rest back.

This is a bit of psy hology. If he is at the back, if slow can be blamed on the trailer. If at the front, the psychology changes and he will do his utmost.

You going to get at your destination at the same time. Rather him in front  worry to be fast than you in front waiting because he is slow.
