Hi, I have a Rascal 3 berth caravan, Tare 875kg.

Will the 1.7 CDti Opel Corsa engine cope with this weight..

Weight-wise it is legal, just not sure of pulling power?

Thanks.trevorrid@vodamail.co.za

depends on the torque curve. see if you can get a curve and work from that

From what I see on the 'net that engine delivers about 240Nm torque....to tow 875 kg should be OK?

I tow a Swing with Grand Vitara. Torque 225Nm. Petrol engine.

With 240Nm you should have no problems at all. The torque is important but you need to find out whether it's on low revs or high revs.

Towed with 2.5 Hilux DC 2012 model fantastic. Then I got the 2013 model which had the same torque as the 3lt but on high revs. That was awfull towing!

I tried to be normal for one day
I gave up!!!

Thank you all for your input. The max torque is 240nm at 2300rpm so that seems about right for towing.

I'll just have to be careful how I distribution the weight inside the caravan. I might also need a Tando or such.

Best regards

Power should be ok - You won't be winning any races.  On weight - you'd probably be borderline.

Big difference between legal and comfortable.

You would probably be towing legal.

most engines will move most caravans - even the biggest. what you should be just as concerned about is the ability to stop in an emergency. my 2 cents worth.

This is where we try to work out how things work.

It is a fact that a caravan with correctly adjusted brakes with ABS on the vehicle would actually stop in a shorter distance whilst towing than it would solo.

There are tests done and also reasons given for this.

With our last Camp at Almega the couple next to our stand used a Corsa 1.7 Bakkie to tow a Scout caravan.

He said that it was a great combination and the weight of the Scout is very close to that of the Rascal.

I would however make use of a stabilizer like a Yellowblade or Tando as well.

I notice the Rascal has a 1100kg GVM and some spec sheets indicate the Corsa 1.7 CDti tare as 1050kg. Another spec sheet list the kerb weight as 1080kg.

One must thus look on the licence disk to get the actual weight as on the e-natis system to get if it is a legal combination.

The most important figure is not always engine capacity, but towing capacity.. From there you go down to legal towing capacity, safety etc...
