Hi Everyone
Was wondering, if there was not people out there interested in taking in overnight caravaners at a fee.
It would have been nice if there was say a data base where a travelling caravaner who wanted an overnight stop over could pay a local house owner to park the caravan sleep over and hit the road next day, just an idea, love to hear peoples opinions.

Hi Lance,
I have been on the lookout for this type of safe stop over for a long time, seeing that most Municipal Parks are on the way out.
Found a gem in Ladysmith W.C.
Hope this turns into a useful thread.
Regards,
Gavin.

Lance, I think the main issue in this case would be ablution facilities/toilet/bathroom.

Many years ago (22?) I found people stranded close to us on the N12 with tow vehicle broken, and landed up arranging to get a tow truck to tow the vehicle plus caravan towed to my house, and the next day they had the vehicle taken back to Johannesburg for repairs.

Eventually they stayed here for about5 or 6 nights, (free), with 220v supplied to caravan to run fridge, etc. We were caravanners ourselves until 2013, and knew their needs, and were glad to help out, BUT, it put quite a strain to our normal houesehold, as we were preparing to get ready to leave to Warmbaths with our van for Dec holiday, and had to postpone our actual book-in date by 2 days.

That was not an isssue, bathroom and toilet facilities in a normal household for strangers is not that easy. Your whole house is eventually open to them.

For a safe parking, behind pallisade fence, and a 220v lead, by all means, even for free!!!

Having said that, on one condition - NO SMOKERS!!!

WilSur had a list for Camping Friends  ( me included) but not allowed on this forum - where there were many people all over the country - with contact details - which you could contact in need of assistance if you are in a town wherever?, and I am sure all the people would have been able/or willing to accomodate fellow campers in need/.

Some years ago someone also thought of trying to get farmers to assist in overnight spots - main thing is to get a data base and maintain it, but I never saw it coming into reality.

We are not camping any more due to ill health, but, when asked, would always be willing to try and assist, as we have/had contact with caravan/motorhome clubs since 1984.

By the way, a few years ago (when I was still active on this forum) I also, when asked, supplied info on camping spots in this area, as well as good quality discounted diesel at about R1.00 to R1.20 cheaper than the filling stations on the N12 in KLERKSDORP area.

Hope you will get this idea off the ground.

Regards.

Frans Pretorius

Thanks Frans that is very interesting and your right toilet facilities would be ideal.
I think I will continue with the R100 pppn caravan sites data base which I will share,I have as most people have base camp contacts throughout the country .

Lance, difficult one. Some years ago I found a guy whose camper broke down, offered my guest flat to him whilst being repaired. To cut a long story short, had to ask him to leave after a month.
Now, I have a private campsite on the farm, and love it when friends visit and use it. But to advertise it for any amount not important. But next thing, it becomes the persons " home" and your responsability.

I agree that makes anyone the moering, and yes that type of idiot spoils it for genuine friends and others that have care and respect.
With that said a shared data base of private stop overs will not work how ever the friends we meet on forum and WhatsApp groups is the way to go.

Lance don't you want to share an email where one can send or request info from or do you want to keep it on the forum/whatsap basis?

Hi Lance,
Midmar dam has two sites under What was Kzn Wildlife.
Bush Willow a bit out of town at Karkloof. Very nice indeed.
Both are not budget prices.
Regards,
Gavin.

I did a day trip to Midmar in December, I was blown away by the size of the dam, not mentioning the camping there, it looked perfect!! Make sure you make a turn there. Are you doing a road trip? If yes, which part of SA will you be traveling?
