I would like to fit a tow bar on my caravan. Sole purpose is to use it for my bicycle racks. I have the Thule 4 bike carrier. Will need to fit a spacer so there would be enough room between the bike rack and the van.

Would welcome any advice and or comments.

Hi Kevin where do you want to fit the carrier at the back of the Van ? For how many bicycles ? You do know that that extra weight at the rear of the Van could cause issues with the handling of the Van not to sure about fatigue on the chassis from the bouncing weight of the bikes

I have done it on both the Penta caravans I had. Although I used them to tow my boat behind my caravan for max 100km. Just to the dam and back.

You should however make sure that the supports and the way that it is attached will be able to not only carry the weight of the bicycles but also the whiplash they have at the rear end of the van.  The further those bicycles are away from the axle of the van the bigger the whiplash when you pass over uneven road surfaces. This is with carrying bicycles.

If you would tow something however that whiplash is much less to nothing and the uneven tar causes a rocking effect on the  caravan axle due to the drag of the towed trailer.

What I want to say is in both caseses there are different forces in carrying just bicycles maybe a bit more.

Morning Kevin..

Unlike towing a small trailer behind a caravan, Dead weight at the back of the caravan is deadly.

Consider either: - Carrying the bycycles on a roofrack on the tug / possibility of the carrier between the Tug & the van (on the A frame of the van) but that will limit your reversing and angles) or Tandem towing a small 4Ft luggage type trailer behind the van.

As for the fitting, the only place I know is Steelite in Booysens road Selby JHB 9 (I Think No197) and speak to Trevor

My 3 Zupta's worth

Slightly quicker downhill....
These days a teeny-tiny bit more slightly quicker....

Kevin, no problem with this at all. Against a number of cautions against this, I went ahead and had a towbar designed and fitted to the back of my Sprite SC. I use this mainly to hitch a bike onto the Bike Caddy when I transport a single bike, but had 3 bikes at the back on my BuzzRack (similar to the Thule) with no hazzles. Admittedly, there is a weight transfer, but honestly not so that you will notice much difference. I also do take care not to go fast over humps, etc. (some of the MTB events are located in far-off places), but this is something I do in any case - bike(s) or not. My towbar is about 120 mm from the caravan itself so I have a neat little "step" on which to carry extra wood etc. if needed. Unsure where you are located, but if need be you can always come visit or I'll send you a photo or two.

I had a towbar on my previous caravan and carried two bikes on a thule carrier and never had any problems. My two bikes weight less than airconditioner units and members here done it without problems.

Also investigate the "A" frame, but,
Will increase hitch weight and reversing angles, but,
His is within view of driver and can be carried upright against nosecone, to avoid the negative reversing angles.
Have not done this, but just something to investigate...
Thinking out the box.

Yip, if the towbar is/was done in a sloppy, uncraftsmanlike manner, then one should expect problems - whether this is fitted to a vehicle, trailer or caravan. Mine is quite sturdy (as said) and I have not had problems at all for the last 2 1/2 years.  Quality is obviously important here!

Very interesting and constructive feedback from all angles. Would not expect anything less from the wealth and knowledge across this forum. Thanks.

I have been using a roof rack for the bicycles, however this has damaged the paintwork where the roof rack clamps down in the door area. Even using an extra piece of rubber tube has not helped. Hilux don't like this method. This is using the Holdfast roof bars with the specific Hilux clamps. Thule does the same damage.

Researching the forum I came across the post from Hennie 1968. Rather like his plan with the longer drop plate with an extra tow bar for the bike carrier.

Attached his photo from his post.

Good day all, I need to fit a tow bar on my caravan for the sole purpose of towing my small trailer where I will be putting my Rubber boat and camping gear such as chairs and gazebo.
Is there any place in or near Rustenburg that will be able to fit it professionally?

I do not know of a place in Rustenburg that can help you with this.  As stated previously in this topic my brother and I each had a towbar fitted behind our 2000 Model Jurgens Pentas. he towed a trailer with two jetski's on and I had a boat behind the Penta.

You must take your caravan to a manufacturer that will be able to access if your caravan suspention wil handle a towbar or not.

When we sold our Penta in 2011 we bought a Classique and the new caravan had one of those modular caravan suspensions which is bolted together. That was the end of tow a Boat behind the caravan as this new suspension did not allow for a towbar to be fitted at all.

If you give me your caravan name and model I can find out if its possible to fit a towbar.

I will see if I can find a Rascall at a dealer nearby.  The model of 2007 how ever make me to believe that your caravan also have the newer modular suspensions.

Will see what I can find out. Maybe another forum member with a 2007 Gypsey can confirm this or not.

So dus maar my eie opinie.

I had my rear mounted spare wheel bracket made and fitted at Steel lite in Booysens. Ph: 011 493 7307

There were a couple of caravans there having tow bars fitted.

They should know which vans can be fitted with hitches.
