How many of our forum members take part in Geocaching?
Geocaching is a free real-world outdoor treasure hunt. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS and can then share their experiences online.
Finding caches takes you to the most unusual places that one would probably never even know existed. Look at http://www.geocaching.com
I treid it a few yers ago when I first got a gps. It drove me crazy!! I could always find the location but almost never find the "cache". At one place I spent about an hour looking around a sort of Boma at the local Ostrich farm. In between the bricks and inside the roof. Covered every inch of the place. No cache and gave up in frustration!
It was fun when you did find the cache.
No Brian. Some of us are still working.
I will try.
I am still battling with the geneaology that Brian got us interested in. Enough trouble finding my grandfather's birthplace and dates thank you.
When we head back to PTA we are going to stop over in Nelspruit for a night or two then we can get together for coffee and I can try assist you some more
I'll let you know when probably early in August, or mail me
Looking forward to your visit Brian even if we do not get around to geneaology.
Had a peek at geocaching.com and it looks interesting. Does one need a smartphone or GPS with a world map or will google earth work?
GPS with local maps is all you need. If you have a smartphone you can download their app then save the caches near you and get to them when you can. The app costs R79.00
If your smartphone has a GPS then you can download them to the phone and use that as well.
But just a GPS will work you can save the caches to your PC then load them to the GPS. If you do it this way then just make sure to note the hints for when you get to the cache to help you find them.
Thought I would bring this forward again. Is anyone else doing geochching while caravaning?
A Geocasher myself but it seems to be fading away in the backround and never really came to "life" here in S.A like overseas.
Very educational and good sight seeing spots to be found in participating in this "hobby"
There is the "trash in . Trash out" campaigns to clean up public places etc. So yes. I stiil enjoy it, and it serves a worthy cause.
Became a member after my initial post here. Never realy came about to do it.
Will look into it again.
Maybe start off something here on the forum with permission of various resorts. Then other forum members can search for it.
This way we would get into it much quicker.
Haven't got time for that. Must go do the washing now..........
Link to guidelines for hiding a geocache. I'm sure the resort owners would be quite happy to have several geocaches on their property. For it to be registered one would need to follow the guidelines linked above.
