Hi All,

I would appreciate some input, please.

We bought our Penta last year March. It is a 1995 model, We knew it had woodrot, but thought it wasn't that bad. After camping for 2 weeks in the Kruger this December, and having lots of rain, the van leaked badly.

The woodrot is to blame, because  it's all over the van.

The price quoted to fix the whole sorry mess, R35 000 - R40 000. We paid R40 000 for the van.

What is the best option. Fix the van completely and keep it. Sell it as scrap! Or what?

Any input will be much appreciated.Embarassed

Karen (Lambchop)

Ouch! Unfortunately woodrot spreads, so it is potentially even worse now then in Dec. Is the van insured? If it is, and no woodrot was noted on the insurance inspection, you might be able to claim for the repair??

Short of sorting the issue out now, I suspect you are going to have an ongoing issue there. If I could'nt get insurance to cover it I would personally let it go and get another van, even if you have to downgrade to an older/more basic one for a while.

Good luck.

Hi Karen,

Woodrot is the cancer of vans, if insurance does not pay, there are 2 options: 1, Repair and hope all is fixed, (40 to buy + 40 to fix = R80 000:00). 2 sell it for as much as you can get, but ensure you tell the buyer of the woodrot (40 to buy, sold for 20 and buy again for 40 +- R60 000:00. Tough one. I wish you all the best, please keep us informed as to what happens.

If money was not available immediately for a new one, I would buy a fly sheet and cover it until my ship comes to buy a new one. Alot of people use it to cool down the caravan, it wont look funny. Important part, you can carry on camping. Good luck

We currently use a tarpaulin, but if we want to buy another van, what do we do with the old one?

Hi Karen

I bought a Gypsey Caravette 5 couple of years ago. Also knew it had woodrot, however I could still camp for 2 years with it. Repaired it last year. Total repairs including new "roof" tent etc.etc.etc cost me R15 000.00.

If the insurance find out that you knew about the woodrot......sorry, you will be held liable.

Before selling the van and take a loss, get more quotes. I see you are in Gauteng. There must be a number of people that can repair your van. Check out the classifieds in the Caravan & Outdoor Mag.

Karen,  on another thread,  someone menyioned a Anton Britz 083 353 2831 who also does insurance jobs for much less.

Camping is second to none.

Hi Karen,

During past Dec/Jan 2013/2014 (while camping at Richards bay Caravan Park), I realised that our old caravan Sprite Sport 1987 developed woodrot in crucial places - we drove in the rain all the way from Gauteng to Richards Bay. I knew that the van had some woodrot before the trip but after this trip it just got worse. I had to make a decision to either sell or repair and taking the age of the van into account (27 years old) I decided to sell.

Your Penta is a great deal "younger" and if insurance does not cover, I would suggest that you phone Marks (he lives in Pretoria North - Akasia) for a quote to repair: his cell: 084 694 5845

Oom Saad

Dit wil vir my voorkom die poskantoor begin nou so stuk, stuk pos aflewer, want ek het gister e-toll rekininge in my pos gekry. Of miskien is e-toll so ''hard-up'' vir fondse dat hulle dit sommer saam die straat sitters stuur om af te lewer.Laughing

Hallo dk

Kurt

Hulle wiskunde by betaal punte is pateties.

Geluk, Karen. Het SIAS jou ook so baie vrae gevra asof jy voel jy is 'n krimineel?

Miskien moet jy eers die plek in Koedoespoort probeer, miskien kom jy goedkoper daar weg.

Hallo Karen

Hi Karen,

Use  a cover over the van from now on, new or repaired. We use  a cover over our new Penta every time we go away for more than 2 days.

Hi all,

An update: Sold the Penta for R20 000, voetstoots. Was completely honest about the woodrot.

Bought a 2005 Jurgens Fleetline privately, getting it tonight.

All worked out well, can't wait to go camping!

Congratulations with your new caravan, trust that you will have many happy camping trips with it due to your honesty. Honesty always counts.

Please, take note: Get yourself one of those sheets, it protects your caravan and help for hot and cold weather conditions.

Thanks for the good wishes,

Last night when we were driving down our street with the new van, just before our house, we saw a small spotted GENET. It ran over the road in front of us!

We live just behind the Union Buildings to the north, in Pretoria.

What a good omen for our new van!

Amazing!

A BAD day in the Kruger is still better than a GOOD day anywhere else...
